Ice queens may get a bad reputation, but the truth is that they run the world. And Anna Wintour ranks high on the exclusive list. Just imagine being so iconic that you’re the infamous reference point for one of the most notoriously uptight movie show characters of all time. And we say it all the time because the devil Wears Prada (2006) and Miranda Priestly’s relevance has not diminished in almost 2 decades, if the history of pop culture is anything to go by.
To give you context, we’re talking about the real-life Miranda Priestly. And no, this is not some ‘she’s just like him’ babble. Anna is Miranda. Miranda was based on Anna. And that’s it. No one really misses a charming hazelnut-colored French bob, with not a single strand out of place, paired with those statement goggles and feeling totally warm and fuzzy. You see the uniqueness. You feel his power.
So what do you do when you’re getting ready to see another version of yourself come to life, this time on stage? You too play a role in this. And this is what Anna did while walking the red carpet The Devil Wears Prada: The Musical The opening night in London took place yesterday. In a fun and fashion-proof jig on the timeless title, Anna channeled the ‘devil’ – Miranda Priestly – and appeared in a clean and no-nonsense colour-blocked Prada ensemble. The silky green trench and navy blue layered embellishment with diamonds screamed fabulousness as Anna strutted down the red carpet. We love a good clash of brilliant colors.
If you’re still thinking this is some lively word play, know that Miranda Priestly, brought to eternal life by the equally iconic Meryl Streep, is literally based on Anna. In fact, Anna had recently addressed this very thing during her conversation with David Letterman. Confirming that she’s not exactly ‘warm’ and ‘cuddly’, she said, “I try to give very clear directions to the people I’m working with and sometimes, unfortunately, they Don’t hear the answers they want to hear. But, I appreciate the amazing work, the good work, the talented people… What I love about the film is that it really takes the magazine into consideration. All the hard work done is shown.
To make this even more obvious, just know that the book of the same name from which this movie was made was written by Lauren Weisberger, who actually worked as Anna’s assistant.
