The weather department has issued a red alert for several areas, including West Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, Chandigarh, Punjab, Delhi, Haryana and parts of Gujarat, as extreme heat conditions are likely in these regions over the next five days.
Private weather forecaster Skymet has also indicated that this week’s heat will be worse. Ten cities across the country have recorded the hottest temperatures in the last 24 hours. While Pilani in Rajasthan, some areas in UP and Punjab recorded temperatures between 45 and 47 degrees, Sirsa in Haryana recorded 47.8 degrees.
In Maharashtra too, the temperature remained between 44 to 45 degrees Celsius during the last 24 hours. It is estimated that the highest daily temperature in these states will rise above 47 degrees Celsius, providing minimal respite for those suffering from extreme heat.
heatstroke cases
Recently, an 80-year-old man at Fortis Hospital Gurgaon received a case of severe heatstroke, in which his body temperature had risen to 105 degrees, along with being in deep sleep from which he was unable to wake up. Several tests were performed, including an MRI scan, which came back normal, although her urine output was low, kidney and liver enzymes were high, and her blood pressure was low, requiring ionotropic medication. He was given a final diagnosis of heatstroke with multiple organ dysfunction. But, with aggressive cooling and hydration, they responded well.
Dr Praveen Gupta, MD and head of the department of Neurology, Fortis Hospital, Gurugram, said, “Early recognition and immediate cooling is important for recovery in heatstroke cases. By doing this, dysfunction of many organs can be prevented and miraculous recovery can occur.
Although there has been no major increase in the number of cases or admissions related to the extreme heat so far, medical experts are still advising to take some precautions, which will help in avoiding any major health disaster.

Dr. Suranjit Chatterjee, Internal Medicine, Apollo Hospital, said that instead of heatstroke, many cases of heat exhaustion and heat cramps are reported. “Such cases are mostly being seen in the elderly with cardiovascular problems and kidney problems and also in some healthy young adults. Also, keeping yourself well hydrated does not mean drinking excessive water, especially in heart and kidney patients. “This should be under the guidance of the treating doctor and one should avoid exercising at the peak of heat,” he said.
Dr Bhaskar Shukla, Senior Consultant – PSRI Institute of Neurology and Neurosurgery, PSRI Hospital, said that for every 1 degree Celsius increase in temperature, there is a 35% higher risk of emergency visits for stroke. “Specifically, high temperature is associated with a 24% increased risk of hemorrhagic stroke (bleeding in the brain), 36% increased risk of ischemic stroke (interruption of blood flow to the brain) and 56% increased risk of transient ischemic attack.” There is an increased risk of (temporary disruption of) blood flow to the brain),” he said.
