The situation has worsened after the elections in Tanzania. (Reuters)Dar es Salaam. Violent clashes broke out across the country after Tanzania’s general elections this week. In this, the main rivals of the current President were barred from contesting the elections. The opposition has made a sensational claim that around 700 people have died due to this unrest and violence. Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu Hassan, who is seeking a second term, is expected to win the election easily. The elections were held on 29 October. This expectation comes after the election officials decided to exclude the candidates of the two largest opposition parties. Results from 120 of the country’s 272 constituencies show that Tanzania’s first female leader is leading with almost 97% of the votes.
The main opposition Chadema party said nearly 700 people had been killed in escalating clashes between protesters and security forces. According to news agency Bloomberg, John Kitoka, director of foreign affairs of the Chadema party, said, “The number of injured is in the thousands.” Kitoka further said, “Many of our supporters are being caught and arrested all over the country.”
Security forces in the East African country have begun a crackdown on protests that began on October 29 and have deployed troops across the country. Even on October 31, armored vehicles are patrolling the streets of the commercial capital, Dar es Salaam. Moreover, internet access is still closed, which was cut off on the election day itself. Tanzania’s Army Chief has said that criminal incidents have taken place during the protests, in which both private and government property has been damaged.
“This cannot be tolerated. We cannot allow this to continue,” Tanzania People’s Defense Force chief Jacob Mukunda said in a televised speech on Tanzania Broadcasting Corp Thursday night.
