On Monday, Tripura was officially recognized as a fully literate, making it the third state to achieve this milestone under the Ullas (All in All in All in Society in Society).
The literacy rate in Tripura has increased by 95.6 percent, in 1961, there has been a significant increase from only 20.24 percent. A state is classified as a fully literate, when its literacy rate exceeds 95 percent, according to the benchmark determined by the Ullas scheme.
Goa and Mizoram are the other two states that have received complete functional literacy. Apart from these states, Ladakh has also been declared a fully literate union territory.
The announcement ceremony was attended by Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha, the attendance of the Ministry of Education, Government of India and the State Education Department as well as new-literate learners and community stakeholders, who were playing an important role in this transformative journey.
In his address, CM Saha described the occasion as a historic milestone in the route to Tripura to fulfill the literacy. “Literacy is very important in the country for the sight of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s creation of India’s creation till 2047. The declaration of Tripura as the third completely literate state in the country is a historic moment. The Education Department should now focus on raising the literacy rate in Tripura,” Saha said.
“It is a matter of great pride for us and will be remembered as a milestone. Earlier, Mizoram and Goa had completely achieved the status of literate states. I congratulate all those who have worked tirelessly to implement this campaign, including education departments. The benefits of public welfare schemes reach the last person,” he said.
Saha attributed this success to the effective implementation of the Ullas program, aligning with the National Education Policy 2020, as by the Ministry of Education. The Ullas plan, conforming to NEP 2020, focuses on adults aged 15 years and above, who has missed the opportunity for formal schooling.
Since its initiation in 2022, Ullas have been executed nationwide on a mission mode, which aims to provide basic literacy, numerical and necessary life skills to non-literate youth and adults (15+ years).
