LOS ANGELES (AP) — Hollywood star Adam Driver admitted he wasn’t ready to leave the “Star Wars” universe and pitched a spinoff to Lucasfilm and Disney that would have been a direct sequel to 2019’s “The Rise of Skywalker” centered on Kylo Ren.
Ben Solo in the sequel trilogy is the son of original characters Han Solo and Leia Organa, making him the grandson of Anakin Skywalker, also known as Darth Vader.
He later transforms into the villain Kylo Ren, who has a redemption arc and dies at the conclusion of “The Rise of Skywalker”, but Driver did not want the story to end there.
“I was always interested in doing another ‘Star Wars,'” Driver said in an interview.
“I’ve been talking about doing another one since 2021. Kathleen got in touch. I always said: With a great director and a great story, I’d get there in a second. I loved that character and loved playing it.”
Driver elaborated on a concept for the film, for which Steven Soderbergh wrote a script, of which the actor says, “It’s one of the best scripts I’ve ever been a part of.”
Driver said, “We presented the script to Lucasfilm. They loved the idea. They completely understood our vision and why we were doing it.” “We took it to Bob Iger and Alan Bergman and they said no. They didn’t see how Ben Solo survived. And that was that.”
The film was tentatively titled “The Hunt for Ben Solo”, with Driver saying, “But now it’s gone, so I can finally talk about it.”
“I had a lot of fun making the film. I’m just sad that fans won’t get to see it,” Soderbergh said in a statement.
The next “Star Wars” movie is “The Mandalorian and Grogu,” a spinoff of the popular Disney series that will arrive on May 22, 2026.
Another film currently in production is “Star Wars: Starfighter”, starring Ryan Gosling. It will be released in theaters on 28 May 2027.
