In a shock to the India block, several members of the Arvind Kejriwal-led Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and Congress joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in Chandigarh on Thursday to prepare for the impending Lok Sabha elections.

Therefore, please accept my resignation from the primary membership of the Aam Aadmi Party and all other responsibilities.”

AAP planned to compete for the mayor’s post in the Chandigarh mayoral election to be held on Thursday, while the Congress intended to contest the senior deputy mayor seat. However, the election date was postponed citing “ill health” of the appointed presiding officer. The decision drew protests from both the Congress and the Aam Aadmi Party, which had formed an alliance for the mayor elections.
Earlier, after the cancellation of the Mayor elections to be held in Chandigarh on Thursday, January 18, Congress and Aam Aadmi Party had fiercely targeted the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
AAP and Congress accused the BJP of not allowing the mayoral elections to be held in view of their “imminent defeat” and also said they would move the Punjab and Haryana High Court to hold the elections.
