Nearly two decades after an unbreakable line of blockbuster hits, Aamir Khan faced back-to-back failures with thugs of thugs (2018) and Lal Singh Chafdha (2022). Now, in a clear conversation with Komal Nahta on his YouTube show game changer, the actor opened up whether he got wrong and how his own confidence played a major role.
Aamir opens about what did Lal Singh Chafadh do wrong
Aamir admitted, “I became a little overwhelmed with Lal Singh Chafdha because I had given a lot of back-to-back hits. This is the place where I had gone wrong,” Aamir accepted.
From the 2001 Lagaan to the 2017 Secret Superstar, Aamir’s filmography was almost untouchable, including 3 stupids, PK, Dangal and Ghajini. But when Hindostan’s thugs crashed at the box office, it marked the end of a golden run. Lal Singh Chafdha, remake of the forest gump, deepened only the wound.
Aamir revealed that he usually evaluates every production through “economic filter”, ensuring that even though the film does not break the record, it should not cause financial loss. But with Lal Singh Chafdha, that filter was ignored.
“Instead of focusing on how much it can earn, I focus on the fact that the film should not be the result of any loss. Unfortunately, I did not put Lal Singh Chaddha through that filter. When you know that your film will earn you 120 crores, you can keep your budget 80 crores, maximum. Ideally, it should have been beach 50-60 crores. However, we spent 200 crores, “he confessed.
Aamir also indicated the Kovid -19 epidemic as a major contributor in spilling costs. He continued to pay his team during the lockdown, a decision he stands, but one that increased the expenses. He shared another example of avoidable expenses: a grand sequence in which his character plays table tennis in China, which never made it for a final cut.
The film eventually earned 133.5 crore worldwide, a minor opening in India 11 crores, crying far away from riot 385 crore domestic and 2,000 crore global hall.
Aamir Khan’s latest projects
Aamir Khan’s latest film Sitare Zameen Paar, released on June 20, emerged as a concrete success, almost earned 266 crore on its full dramatic runs worldwide, against the surrounding production cost 122 crores.
Aamir was also seen doing a cameo in the porter, Rajinikanth and starrer, who was directed by Lokesh Kanagarj. In addition, he has announced a superhero film with Lokesh, expected to go into production in the second half of 2026.
Aamir will also appear in a cameo under the direction of Aryan Khan, Bollywood’s BA *** DS, which is set to release on Netflix on 18 September.
