Actor Aamir Khan has spoken about why Indian films are not nominated at the Oscars in the Best International Feature category. During an interview with BBC Asian Network, Aamir was told what was actor Shah Rukh Khan’s response to the same question, and Aamir disagreed. No film has been nominated for an Oscar in the International Film category since Aamir’s 2001 blockbuster Lagaan. (Also Read | Aamir Khan says Bhuvan should not have been clean shaven in Lagaan)
India’s Aamir doesn’t get an Oscar nomination every year
Aamir opened up about the process of receiving an Oscar nomination and how difficult it is. “People forget that this is probably the toughest category at the Oscars,” he said. Because when you’re competing for Best Picture, you’re competing with a limited number of movies. But in the Best International Feature category, you’re actually competing with the best film from each country… and then you’re in a field with 80 other films. And getting nominated among 80 films is tough in itself. The reason we don’t have nominations every year for India is because there are films coming from Iran, Germany, France, all over the world which are very good films. You are in very good company. “To be nominated is a big deal.”
What did Shahrukh say about this a few years ago
After this Aamir was told what Shahrukh Khan had said as the reason for this. In an earlier interview, Shah Rukh said that Lagaan was “a combination of an art and a commercial film” and called it “a wonderfully made film”. The actor said that Indian films “have to change the format of our films”. Shahrukh had also said, “If I am invited to your party, I will have to dress as per the code given by you. I cannot wear my code of two and a half hours and five songs. We have to change it.” ,
Aamir disagrees with Shahrukh
Responding to this, Aamir said in a new interview, “No, I do not agree.” I don’t agree. Because Lagaan was for three hours and 42 minutes. And it had six songs. And it got nominated. To be nominated, members must really like your film. Lagaan proves that a film with songs, even a very long one, is not a problem for the Academy members. According to me, it depends on how good your work is and how you are able to touch hearts. At the end of the day, members are humans too. You have to admit that other countries are also making equally good films.
Indian films at Oscars
In Indian history, only three films – Mother India, Salaam Bombay and Lagaan – have been nominated in the International Feature category. In recent times, RRR won the Best Original Song award and Elephant Whispers won the Best Documentary Short award. Writing with Fire and All That Breathes received a nod in the Best Documentary Feature category.
about taxes
Lagaan (2001) is an epic period sports drama film written and directed by Ashutosh Gowariker. The film starred Aamir, Gracy Singh, Rachel Shelley and Paul Blackthorne. The film tells the story of residents of an Indian village who are challenged to a game of cricket by an arrogant British Indian Army officer. Already burdened by high taxes and several years of drought, they play along because the official tells them it is a ploy to avoid paying those taxes.
