Nowadays every child has a smartphone in his hand. While going to school in the morning, playing in the afternoon, or returning from tuition in the evening, the phone is always with you. We parents think that the child is just playing games or chatting with friends, but the dangers in the outside world are no less. Sometimes a small mistake or a stranger’s betrayal puts the child in trouble. In such a situation, if we take some precautions beforehand, a major accident can be averted. Putting parental controls on the phone is exactly like teaching a child to ‘look here and there while crossing the road’ while going to school.
This is not spying, but love and responsibility. It takes just a few minutes to set up and gives you the peace of mind that if something goes wrong, we’ll be able to quickly find out and help. Just like that American father saved his daughter.
A scary incident happened on Christmas day in Texas, America. A 15 year old girl had gone out to walk her dog. Suddenly a 23 year old man showed her a knife and forcibly took her in his car. When the girl did not return home, the parents became very worried. The father immediately used the parental control installed on his daughter’s phone.
With this feature they could track the location of the daughter’s phone. The location revealed that the phone was in a deserted forested area about 3 kilometers away. Father immediately reached there. There were a daughter and a dog in a red pickup truck, and the accused was misbehaving with the girl.
Why is parental control setting necessary in the phone?
All this was possible only because the phone had parental control installed, which shows the location. This incident makes it clear how important it is to install safety features in children’s phones. This not only keeps children safe, but can also help in emergencies.
Let us now know how to set parental lock on the phone, so that children remain safe and their activities can be tracked. Most of the phones are Android or iPhone. There are easy methods in both.
On Android phones (from Google Family Link):
- Download the Google Family Link app to your and your child’s phone.
- Login to your Google account on your parents’ phone.
- Create or login to your child’s Google account on their phone (parental controls for under 13 years of age).
- Link the child’s device to the app.
- Now you can track location, set screen time limits, block apps, and see your child’s activity.
On iPhone (from Screen Time and Find My):
- Go to Settings > Screen Time in the child’s phone.
- Select Turn On Screen Time, then select This is My Child’s iPhone.
- Set a passcode (don’t tell kids).
- Turn on Content & Privacy Restrictions. Make app limits, content block and privacy settings here.
- For location, turn on the Find My app and add your account to Family Sharing. This will show real-time location.
These features are free and easily installed. With this, children stay away from wrong content, do not spend too much time on the phone, and if needed, they can get help from location. Like that American father got it. Parents should talk to children about this and make rules. This will make children safe and responsible.
