Pat Nibin Maxwell, 31, of Kollam, Kerala, was killed when a missile fired from Lebanon by Hezbollah militants fell near Israel’s northern border community of Margaliot. Two other Indians from Kerala were also injured in the attack. They were identified as Idukki natives Paul Melvin and Bush Joseph George.
“The missile struck a plantation in the moshav (collective farming community) Margaliot in the Galilee region in Israel’s north around 11 a.m. on Monday,” rescue services spokesman Magen David Adom (MDA) told PTI. Heller.”
Maxwell, who hailed from Kollam, had come to Israel two months ago on a work contract and was working in a plantation there. He was near the garden when the missile hit the Israeli border.
Maxwell is survived by his wife and five-year-old daughter. Nibin’s wife is also seven months pregnant, his father told news agency ANI. The father said that he has been informed about his son’s death and now he is waiting for the body to arrive.
Maxwell has two other siblings and his elder brother also works in Israel. Maxwell’s father said, the third brother is in Abu Dhabi.
His family has already contacted the Indian Embassy and the body should be brought to Kerala in about four days, Hindustan Times reports.
Israel’s Embassy in New Delhi said, “We are deeply shocked and saddened by the death of one Indian citizen and injury to two others due to the cowardly terrorist attack carried out by Shia terrorist organization Hezbollah on agricultural workers engaged in peaceful farming.” “The garden in the northern village of Margaliot tomorrow afternoon.”
The attack is believed to have been carried out by the Hezbollah faction in Lebanon, which has been launching rockets, missiles and drones at northern Israel daily since October 8 in support of Hamas amid the ongoing war in the Gaza Strip.
The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) said on Monday that they responded by shelling the launch site with artillery. The IDF also said it struck a Hezbollah compound where members of the group had gathered in the town of Chihne in southern Lebanon, and another site belonging to Hezbollah in Ayta ash-Shab.
According to PTI report, seven civilians and 10 IDF soldiers on the Israeli side have been killed in the clashes between Israel and Hezbollah.
