While it may seem like a simple task, the fact is that removing makeup involves a few steps to help you get clear-looking skin. Gayatri Chakraborty, National Creative Director, Lakme Salon, shares her expert tips with HT ShopNow on how to gently but effectively remove makeup, leaving skin clean, healthy and well-cared for.

How to remove makeup correctly

Step 1: Start with clean hands

Clean hands are essential for removing makeup properly. Before touching your face, wash your hands with soap and water to avoid transferring bacteria and dirt to your skin. This step prevents unnecessary irritation and ensures that your cleaning products work more effectively.

Step 2: Use makeup remover that suits your skin

First things first, always use makeup remover to remove all the dirt, grime and makeup residue. A dedicated makeup remover helps break down stubborn products more efficiently than regular face wash. According to Chakraborty, “Never use makeup wipes alone to clean your makeup. Wipes pull makeup onto your skin instead of removing it. They also leave behind a film that can clog pores. I recommend them only in emergencies, never as a replacement for cleansing.”

The type of remover you choose should match your skin’s needs:

Micro water: It is ideal for sensitive or acne-prone skin. It removes dirt and makeup without heavy rubbing.

Oil cleanser: Oil cleansers are excellent for removing waterproof mascara, long-wear foundation, and sunscreen. These work well for all skin types, including oily skin, as the oils dissolve oil.

Cream or Milk Cleanser: Cream or milk-based cleansers are best for dry or mature skin. They cleanse while adding hydration.

Balm Cleanser: If you like to wear heavy makeup, balm cleansers are for you, as they melt away makeup easily.

“Cleansing doesn’t have to be a quick splashy step. Take at least a minute to massage your cleanser in. This helps makeup properly dissolve and increases blood circulation, which naturally enhances the glow,” explains Chakraborty.

Step 3: Pay special attention to the eyes and lips

Eye makeup, especially mascara or eyeliner, is more resistant and requires extra care. According to Chakraborty, “You should do this Remove eye makeup with a separate remover, Specially formulated for the eyes, as this delicate area is prone to irritation.” She further recommends using Two-step remover to remove mascara and kohl. You should also not rub your eyes, as this can lead to fine lines long before drawing.

For liquid lipstick or stains, apply a little oil-based remover and let it sit for a while before wiping off. This prevents tearing and excessive rubbing.

Step 4: Follow with a second cleanser (double cleansing)

Double cleansing is one of the most effective ways to remove every trace of makeup. Chakraborty mentions that it’s important to wipe off your makeup again and again. “After your makeup remover, use a mild water-based facial cleanser. Double cleansing removes leftover residue, clears pores, and prepares the skin for serums and sunscreen or moisturizer.”

She also recommends using lukewarm water for double cleansing, as it doesn’t strip away the natural oils. Whereas Hot water destroys the blockage, cold water does not clean well.

Step 5: Pat dry and refresh your skin

After cleansing, gently pat your skin dry with a clean towel. Avoid rubbing, which may irritate the skin. Chakraborty says, “YouTake a microfiber towel or soft cotton pad to pat your skin dry. Avoid rough towels that cause micro tears.”

She further emphasizes that hydration after cleansing is also important. Therefore, she recommends the following:

Toner or Essence: Helps balance the pH of the skin and prevents any dryness.

Serum: Once your skin is cleansed, apply a product like vitamin C, retinol or a hydrating serum.

Moisturizer: Maintain hydration to keep your skin soft and healthy.

Your nighttime skin care will work more effectively on properly cleansed skin.
