Calendar year 2025 may see a reshuffle at the top of India’s passenger vehicle market, with Maruti Suzuki maintaining its dominant lead and Tata Motors moving to the third position. Meanwhile, Mahindra is overtaking Hyundai to become the second largest carmaker in the country, according to vehicle data.
Maruti’s lead continues
Maruti Suzuki will end the year well ahead of the competition with total sales of 15,42,910 units to date. The company continued to benefit from wide spread across various price points, strong rural penetration and consistent demand for models such as Swift, WagonR, Baleno, Brezza and Ertiga. While SUVs gained market share overall, Maruti’s ability to generate volumes through both hatchbacks and compact SUVs helped it maintain a strong lead.
SUVs work in Mahindra’s favor
Mahindra is projected to end calendar year 2025 at second position with sales of 5,29,295 units. A major factor behind this performance was its SUV-only portfolio. Models like Scorpio-N, XUV700, Thar, Bolero and XUV3XO remained in demand throughout the year. As buyers are increasingly preferring SUVs for their better driving position, perceived safety and road presence, Mahindra is well placed to cash in on this trend without relying on hatchbacks or sedans.
Tata’s EV incentive adds real volume
Tata Motors is in third place. The company sold 4,78,774 internal combustion passenger vehicles along with 64,877 electric cars in 2025, taking its total to 5,43,651 units till date. Strong demand for the Punch, Nexon and Tiago remained at the heart of Tata’s performance, while its EV lineup continued to lead the electric passenger vehicle segment despite rising competition.

Hyundai’s hold on the crowded SUV sector has faded
Hyundai has slipped to fourth position with total sales of 5,22,548 units. The Creta and Venue remained among the brand’s strongest contributors, but Hyundai faced increasing pressure in the compact and midsize SUV segments. Despite the decline in rankings, the company continued to register stable volumes supported by its extensive dealership network and export operations.
Toyota will be in the top five with sales of 2,90,263 units. Its numbers were largely driven by MPVs and SUVs, including the Innova range and urban cruiser Hayrider, with hybrid powertrains remaining a key differentiator for the brand.
Industry-wide sales increased following the GST reforms, which improved affordability and reduced ownership costs for buyers. Easy financing conditions and steady urban demand further supported volumes in the second half of the year.
