Paul Costello, the renowned Irish fashion designer best known for dressing the late Princess Diana, has died at the age of 80. His label confirmed that he died peacefully in London after a short illness.
In a statement, the brand said: “We are deeply saddened to announce the passing of Paul Costello after a short illness. He passed away peacefully in London, surrounded by his wife and seven children.” The family is saddened by the loss and has asked for privacy.
Princess Diana’s trusted fashion partner
Costello became a prominent figure in British fashion through his long partnership with Princess Diana. He served as her personal designer from 1983 until her death in 1997.
According to The Independent, she was praised for creating a soft, elegant and sophisticated look, which became part of her signature style.
One of his designs, a chiffon skirt that appeared slightly transparent in bright light, once caused public discussion, but Costello always looked back on his work with Diana with deep pride.
In an old interview with BBC4 radio, she spoke warmly of their relationship and described him as “so gentle, so feminine, so warm, so humorous”.
