Children’s Day 2025: Children’s Day is a reminder about the essence of childhood – that time of wonder, exploration, discovery and sparkle that is inherent in every child. As children explore, play and make-believe, they develop important life skills and create happy memories. But that same sense of adventure usually leads them to the germs that cause common infections during childhood. They are still developing immune systems, so they are more susceptible to getting sick from coughs, colds, flu, stomach bugs, or ear and throat infections. All of these illnesses are “normal stages of having a baby,” but they can have an impact on a child’s daily life, lead to missed days at school, and make parents worried.

Children’s Day serves as a reminder to all of us to give top priority to the health of children. One of the best gifts parents can give is to ensure that their children grow up in safety and good health. By knowing common infections, identifying warning signs and adopting simple prevention measures – good hygiene, adequate nutrition, vaccination and prompt medical care – families can protect children from such dangers and help them grow to their full potential.

Dr. Medha, Pediatrician, Madhukar Rainbow Children’s Hospital, Delhi lists common infections in children and preventive strategies. Respiratory tract infections: This includes the common cold, flu, and pneumonia: These are the most frequent infections in children, and the infections are easily spread through droplets produced by coughing or sneezing. Common symptoms include fever, cough, runny nose and general fatigue.

Prevention Tips:

  1. Encourage frequent hand washing with soap and water.
  • Teach children to cover their mouth and nose when sneezing or coughing.
  • Try to keep them away from crowded and poorly ventilated areas during flu season. Timely vaccinations: flu/pneumococcal shots, etc.

2. Gastrointestinal infections (diarrhea and foodborne illnesses): Gastrointestinal infections include contaminated food, water or dirty hands that can cause vomiting and diarrhea.

Prevention Tips:

  • Serve freshly cooked and thoroughly washed food and use boiled or filtered water.
  • Maintain good hygiene in food preparation and storage.
  • Encourage children to wash hands before eating and after using the toilet.
  • Breastfeeding as an infant provides natural protection against many intestinal infections.

3. Ear and throat infections: These are common in school-going children and the pathogens often cause ear pain, sore throat or difficulty in swallowing.

Prevention Tips:

  • Avoid exposure to tobacco smoke and allergens.
  • Treating a cold in its early stages helps avoid complications in the ears.
  • Instruct children not to share bottles or utensils in school.

4. Skin and eye infections: Impetigo, conjunctivitis and fungal rashes are common in areas where hygiene is lacking.

Prevention Tips:

  • Keep nails short and skin clean.
  • Never share towels, bedding or personal items.
  • Mild, child-friendly cleansers should be used and wounds should be kept covered.

5. Power of vaccination and nutrition

Vaccination is one of the most effective ways to keep children safe from serious infections like measles, mumps and hepatitis. Along with this, a diet rich in fruits, vegetables and proteins will naturally enrich your child’s immunity levels. Good health habits, hygiene and regular checkups also contribute a lot to keeping children strong, active and free from infections.
