Indian-origin Republican politician Vivek Ramaswamy on Tuesday criticized OpenAI over adding a new feature to ChatGPAT that allows access to erotica content for verified adults.
Ramaswamy’s response comes after OpenAI founder Sam Altman announced the move that ChatGPT would begin rolling out age-verified access in December and ease restrictions for users in mental crisis.
Calling the new feature “disturbing”, the right-wing politician said it would do nothing to improve productivity.
He said, “The unnecessary ‘over-humanization’ of AI is becoming troubling. This new “feature” will do nothing to improve productivity or prosperity. But it will almost certainly increase addiction and loneliness.”
Ramaswamy ruled out government interference, commenting that such a move required “extreme caution”.
“I don’t think government intervention would make it any better, but extreme caution needs to be taken in designing AI with the specific ability to manipulate humans sexually or emotionally,” the leader said.
What is the new feature of OpenAI for adults?
In a post Tuesday, Sam Altman said that ChatGPT has been restrictive with its users so far.
They said, “We made ChatGPT quite restrictive to ensure we were mindful of mental health issues. We realize this made it less useful/enjoyable for many users who had no mental health issues, but given the seriousness of the issue we wanted to get it right.”
ChatGPT will begin “treating adults like adults” in December.
“In December, as we fully implement age-gating and as part of our “Treat Adult Users Like Adults” principle, we will allow even more like erotica for verified adults,” Altman said.
How did netizens react?
The rollout of the new ChatGPT feature for adults has sparked reactions across the internet. Some users expressed concern over erotic content being made available on AI, while others supported the move.
One user said, “The closer machines mimic emotions, the more we risk forgetting ourselves. Progress should serve the soul, not replace it.”
“Some adults will want AI erotica, and that’s their decision. But I would venture to guess that it’s a corrosive thing to engage in and would advise against it if you value human relationships. [sic]“Another added.
“Adults should be treated like adults and be able to use AI however they want. So far OpenAI is pampering us like children, dismissing tons of signals that aren’t even malicious in nature. This is why open source should really win. We can’t let a few companies control the entire AI world,” one netizen responded.
