Cabinet Approves 57 New Kendriya Vidyalayas with Balvatikas Under NEP 2020.
On the Economic Affairs (CCEA) headed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the Cabinet Committee has approved the establishment of 57 new Kendia Vidya (KVS) across the country under the civilian sector. These schools will meet the educational requirements of children with increasing number of central government employees.
The total estimated cost for installation of 57 kV is around 5,862.55 crore rupees, which is to be spent in a nine-year period starting from 2026-27. Of this, about Rs 2,585.52 crore will be used for construction and infrastructure, while about Rs 3,277.03 crore will go to operational expenses. Significantly, as part of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, these new schools, first, are the basic-three years of basic phase (pre-primary education).
The Kandriya Vidyala Yojana was first approved in November 1962 with the aim of providing similar educational facilities across the country, mainly for children of transferable and non-transferable central government employees, including defense and paramilitary personnel. To implement this, the “Central School Organization” was formed under the Ministry of Education.
The process of opening new KV is going on. The Ministry of Education and Kandria Vidyala Sangathan (KVS) regularly receive proposals from sponsoring officers like central government ministries, departments and state/UT administration. These sponsor officials carried forward the request based on the needs of their areas. Currently, there are 1,288 functional KVs located abroad in Moscow, Kathmandu and Tehran, with a joint student enrollment of around 13.62 lakhs by 30 June, 2025.
The new approval of 57 KV comes in addition to the earlier approval of 85 KV. Together, this expansion reflects the high demand of KV across the country and its purpose is to do balanced growth in areas. 7 of the newly approved schools will be sponsored by the Ministry of Home Affairs and the remaining 50 states and UT officials.
This latest approval incorporates 17 states and UTs, focusing on areas that were first abandoned. Out of 57, 20 schools will be opened in districts where no KV currently exists despite the large number of central government employees. Additionally, 14 will be installed in aspirational districts, in 4 leftist extremism (LWE)-contracted districts, and 5 in north-east and hilly areas.
The implementation of the project will include making administrative and teaching positions as per KVS criteria. Each full KV, which runs from Balvatika to class XII, adjusts about 1,520 students and requires about 81 staff members.
With the establishment of 57 new KV, a total of 86,640 students will benefit, and about 4,617 permanent jobs will be made. In addition, construction and related infrastructure will generate additional employment opportunities for work efficient and unskilled workers.
Under NEP 2020, a large number of KV has already been upgraded as PM Shri schools, nominated as 913 KVS. Due to its quality teaching, modern facilities and innovative education, the center students in India remain in the most demanded schools.
The demand for admission in Balvatika and class I in these schools continues every year, and KV students consistently perform the best in CBSE board examinations compared to other educational systems.
With this expansion, the government aims to spread quality education in states and regions that have been outlined in earlier stages. At the same time, the proposal ensures broad coverage in high-demand areas with an important population of central government employees, while aspirants strengthen access to education in challenging and socially important districts.
