The latest tension between Russia and Azerbaijan was erupted when the police took over 50 Azerbaijani citizens into custody on 28 June in the city of Yakaterinburg. All of them were caught in a murder case in 2001, during which two brothers named Jiaddin and Hussain Safarov were killed. Many people were injured. After this murder, Azerbaijan’s government erupted and reacted strongly. The Ministry of External Affairs described it as an illegal attack and intentional attack and murder.
Enemies started to be made with friends?
This decline in relationships with Azerbaijan, once considered close to Russia, suddenly came. Expert Vadim Dubanov says that ‘this conflict is part of a long process’. Ever since the Karabakh War in 2020 and the military success of Azerbaijan of 2023, the Ilham Allae government of Azerbaijan started connecting itself less than Russia and more than Türkiye and West. But on 25 December 2024, an Azerbaijani passenger aircraft who was going to Grogen (Chechnya) was accidentally killed by Russia’s air defense system. Out of 67 passengers, 38 died. Russia did not apologize, only expressed condolences. Aliev expressed strong displeasure over this and described it as a Russian attempt to ‘suppress the evidence and spread lies’.
After this, in May, Aliav refused to attend Russia’s Victory Day Parade, it was considered by Russia to be a ‘clear political sign’. This was the first indication when Russia was shocked by its neighbor.
Raid on Sputnic Office
Azerbaijan gave the second blow to Russia on 30 June. Azerbaijan police raided the office of Russian government media ‘Sputnik’ in Baku. Editor Igor Kartavikh and Managing Editor Belusav were taken into custody. They were alleged that they are agents of Russian intelligence agency FSB. Russia immediately summoned the ambassador of Azerbaijan and lodged an objection and described the move as ‘hostile’. After this, Russia got the third blow on 1 July. Azerbaijan arrested eight Russian citizens on charges of cybercrime and drug smuggling. When their pictures came, the world was shaken, because they were introduced in the court in a blood -stained condition. Experts believe that this conflict will last long, but the relationship is unlikely to break the relationship.
