Thanks to pop culture and the beauty industry, the allure of shiny, smooth and straight hair is undeniable – as evidenced by the growing popularity of hair straightening and smoothing treatments. However, the US Food and Drug Administration recently proposed banning hair straightening products that contain or emit formaldehyde, linking them to an increased risk of uterine, breast or ovarian cancer. With trends like ‘glass hair’ and ‘liquid hair’ trending on social media, the allure of straight hair increases manifold. But, experts advise not to fall prey to it. Consultant dermatologist Dr Amit Vij says, “Formaldehyde products are now available not only in salons but also at home. Temporary straightening with heat, conditioners, and home-made masks are much better options than using formaldehyde-based straighteners and smoothening hair agents. Try embracing your natural hair.

hot oil treatment
Apply a hot towel on your oiled hair 3-4 times for five minutes each. Then wash your hair with mild shampoo. Detangle with a wide-toothed comb. This treatment will be more effective for wavy hair than curly hair.
Coconut Milk and Lemon Juice
Mix equal amount of lemon juice with coconut milk and apply this mixture all over the scalp and hair. After 30 minutes, wash your hair with normal water. The fat present in coconut milk helps in softening the hair. Lemon juice cleanses the scalp and has straightening effect on the hair.
Parsley Seed and Henna Hair Tonic
Boil 2 tablespoons crushed parsley seeds and ½ cup chopped rosemary for 20-25 minutes. Let the solution cool; Then filter it. Wash your hair as you usually do and apply this toner on it. Then wrap the hair in a hot towel for an hour. Do not wash your hair after this. Let it dry naturally. With regular use, this hair tonic/rinse will give shiny, strong hair with straight texture. Use this tonic at least once every fortnight.

Hair Mask: Henna is considered a natural hair straightener. Mix 3 tablespoons henna powder and 2 tablespoons amla powder and make a smooth paste. Break an egg into this mixture and add a little lemon juice. Mix it and make a thick paste and apply it all over your hair and scalp. Leave it for an hour. You can do this every two weeks. With regular use, your hair will become less tangled and look smooth and straight.
Banana Mask: Take a ripe banana and add one tablespoon of honey or curd to it. Apply the mixture to your hair, covering all hair from roots to ends. Leave it on for 20-30 minutes. Wash thoroughly with shampoo.
Straightening Mask: Take one egg white and mix it with half a cup of rice flour and one cup of multani mitti (if your scalp is oily). Apply the paste, comb gently with a wide-toothed comb and leave on for 15 minutes. Wash it with a mild shampoo.
