Prime Minister Narendra Modi greeted the Bengali New Year on Tuesday.
In a post on X, PM Modi wrote, “Best wishes on Poila Boshakh! I hope that all your wishes will be fulfilled this year. I pray for everyone’s success, happiness, prosperity and good health. Sukho Nabo Barsho! “PM Modi said.”

‘Poila Boshakh’ is seen by Bengalis worldwide, regardless of geographical location, but the occasion has a special significance in West Bengal, Tripura and Assam in Bengalis in Bangladesh and Bengali-speaking areas of India.
Poila Boshakh is a day of renovation, joy and cultural pride. It brings together communities together regardless of religious or regional differences and celebrates the shared heritage of Bengali people.

Poila Boshakh has marked the beginning of the Bengali calendar year and is celebrated by Bengali communities in various parts in India and abroad. The word ‘polia’ means the first month, and ‘Boishkh’ is the first month of the Lunisoller Bengali calendar. Today, the community celebrates the beginning of the year 1432.
According to Bengali Saqkadi, the first day of the year is considered the most auspicious.
In the celebration of ‘Noboborsho’ (New Year), the houses are cleaned and decorated to welcome Goddess Lakshmi and Lord Ganesha. The front door is decorated with alpana, a painting that has ground rice mixture and flour with water.
On the new year, people wearing new clothes go to temples to pray and receive blessings from God. Bengali cuisine is also prepared at home, and restaurants, especially in Kolkata, serve authentic Bengali cuisine that provides a gastronomic pleasure.
The shopkeepers started the day by demonstrating Lakshmi-Narayan and Ganesh Puja, who further wished a prosperous year. They start new business account books in the name of God. As a custom, priests draw a swastika symbol with vermilion on the trader’s account book to bring good luck to the business.
