Jamit Ulema-e-Hind chief Mahmood Madni on Sunday claimed that ‘BJP and its friends’ were helping builders and land occupants to get land in major places with the Waqf Act. Explosive claims come as a movement in Rock West Bengal as Murshidabad, where three people have been killed and several police personnel have been injured.
The recently implemented Waqf (Amendment) Act, 2025 has staged extensive criticism and protests across India, in which prominent Muslim leaders and organizations have considered the law politically motivated and harmful to the autonomy of Waqf properties.
The Act, which was assured of the presidency on April 5, aims to improve the management of Waqf properties, but has been accused of serving vested interests rather than removing real concerns.
Waqf Act criticism
Jamit Ulema-e-Hind chief Mahmud Madani has strongly criticized the Act, alleging that it was designed to facilitate the land under the guise of reform.
Speaking at a press conference in Delhi, Madni claimed that the story used to justify the amendment falsely portrayed previous Waqf boards as unacceptable institutions.
“This is not a matter of Waqf, but is a matter of politics. In the name of Muslims, sometimes abusing Muslims or sympathizing Muslims, the act (was implemented) was with malicious intentions,” Madni said.
He claimed that the story used to justify the amendment clearly depicted the previous Waqf Board as uncontrolled powers and no government inspection.
He said, “BJP and its friends and media friends in the country told that the earlier Waqf Board was such that it could do anything in forming Waqf Board. The Muslim community had no role in the government. People of their choice were made in the government,” he said.
Madani alleged that the Act is designed to help real estate developers and land Grabers to get Prime Waqf Properties.
He said, “You are trying to help the builders and land occupants, so that they get land in major places. They used to say that it was oppression. This Act or amendment is not right for the country, society or Muslims. You are benefiting to the occupiers,” he said.
Madani argued that the new law reduces the promises made by the founding leaders of India to Muslims and benefits real estate developers to capture Prime Waqf properties.
Madani called for a peaceful protest across the country, emphasizing non -violence and patience in the struggle for justice. “We have appealed to people to protest peacefully to protest everywhere. And we condemn any violence – it will only weaken our movement,” Madni said.
“Our ancestors decided that we would live in this country. The founders of this country made some promises for us, and now those decisions are being trampled,” he said.
Murshidabad violence on Waqf Act
The Waqf (Amendment) Act, 2025 in Murshidabad district of West Bengal led to violent protests, resulting in at least three deaths and several injuries.
