Maharashtra Speaker Rahul Narvekar is all set to deliver his verdict on January 10 on the disqualification petitions against Chief Minister Eknath Shinde and several MLAs, Vidhan Bhavan officials said on Monday.
“The decision is expected after 4 pm on January 10. The Speaker’s office is finalizing the decision,” the news agency quoted Vidhan Bhavan officials as saying. PTI As stated on Monday. “The operative part of the decision is likely to be announced on the day, while the detailed order will be given to both the groups later,” he said.
What we know so far about the case in 10 points
1. In June 2022, CM Eknath Shinde and many MLAs rebelled against the then Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray. Due to this there was a split in Shiv Sena. With this, Mahavikas Aghadi (MVA) was ousted from power in Maharashtra. The MVA-led government included the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP), Shiv Sena and Congress.
2. Cross petitions were filed by the Shinde and Thackeray factions seeking action against each other under anti-defection laws.
3. Following the rebellion in June 2022, Shinde became the Chief Minister of Maharashtra with the support of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). In July 2023, Ajit Pawar faction of NCP joined his government.
4. The matter went to the Supreme Court. However, the Supreme Court had set December 31, 2023 as the deadline for delivering the verdict. But on December 15, the Supreme Court gave 10 days’ time and fixed a new date of January 10 for the decision.
5. Meanwhile, the Election Commission gave the name ‘Shiv Sena’ and ‘bow and arrow’ symbol to the Shinde-led faction, while the Thackeray-led faction was to be called Shiv Sena (Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray), with its symbol being a burning torch. ,
What next after the Speaker’s decision?
According to PTI, officials of both the factions said that in case of an adverse decision by the Speaker, they will approach the Supreme Court.
