Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Sanjay Raut has informed that seat-sharing talks are almost complete with the opposition India Bloc’s allies in Maharashtra, including Congress, NCP, Shiv Sena and Prakash Ambedkar (Vinchit Bahujan Aghadi chief). Raut said the talks have been ‘positive’. This comes a day after the Congress held an AICC meeting with state Congress leaders to discuss the seat-sharing formula.
Sanjay Raut’s earlier comment that Congress should start seat-sharing talks with Shiv Sena (UBT) from ‘zero’ as the party “has not won any seats” in the state, had triggered a war of words.
“I discussed with senior party leaders who are part of the high-level committee. In a few days, we will sit with the committee formed by Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge, and our primary discussions will be over,” Sanjay Raut said.
“Our talks on seat sharing with Congress, NCP, Shiv Sena and Prakash Ambedkar (Vanchit Bahujan Aghadi chief) are almost complete. It has been a very positive discussion. We do not see any conflict among the four parties… We are in talks with Congress and Prakash Ambedkar.”
Leaders of Shiv Sena (UBT) and NCP (Sharad Pawar faction) in a meeting decided that the Uddhav camp should contest on 23 seats while the NCP will insist on ten to eleven seats. However, Congress leaders decided that they should get 22 seats in the seat sharing formula.
In the last general elections in 2019, the undivided Shiv Sena had won 18 of the 23 seats in alliance with the BJP, while the NCP had won four of the 19 seats contested in alliance with the Congress. However, after the split in both the parties, both Shiv Sena (UBT) and NCP (Sharad Pawar) are currently in the weakest position.
The top Congress leadership, including party president Mallikarjun Kharge and Rahul Gandhi, held meetings with members of the party’s alliance committee and manifesto committee here in the national capital on Thursday.
The grand old party came together twice, first with the Congress Alliance Committee meeting at party chief Kharge’s residence and later with the Congress Manifesto Committee meeting at the AICC headquarters, which was chaired by the party’s Rajya Sabha MP P Chidambaram.
Giving information about the meeting of the Alliance Committee, committee convenor Mukul Wasnik said that the distribution of Congress seats within the India Block was discussed in the meeting.
Meanwhile, while giving information about the meeting of the Manifesto Committee, Chidambaram said, “This was the first meeting of the Manifesto Committee.” There will be a meeting again next week regarding the Congress manifesto for the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.” Today’s meeting.
