The study found that remembering stories accompanied by emotionally charged music could create space for new emotions to be associated.

Music and rhythm have a way of reconnecting us with our memories. From songs to tunes, it’s amazing how they can bring the past back to us one musical note at a time. Music and memories: how are they connected?

Music is not just an auditory experience. When we listen to music, areas of the brain that are responsible for emotions and memory are also active. This explains why certain songs or music can make us emotional.

Study findings:

The study was conducted over three days. On the first day, participants were asked to recall a neutral story. On the second day, they had to recall those stories against a background of positive music, or negative music, or sometimes silence. On this day, changes in blood flow were detected and their brain activities were recorded. On the third day, participants were again asked to recall those stories, without the presence of music.

Therefore, the researchers concluded that music can act as an emotional attractor, connecting with memories and changing the emotional tone with which it is remembered. External auditory cues when recalling can also influence these memories to become more flexible, making room for new emotional elements to be added.
