Immunity is the body’s defence system that fights diseases and infections, where the body has both innate immunity, which is present from birth, and acquired immunity, which develops after exposure to pathogens. The stronger the innate immunity, the better the overall health of the body, as it acts as the body’s natural defence system and experts claim that yoga plays a vital role in boosting this innate immunity system.
In an interview with HT Lifestyle, Himalayan Siddha Akshar, founder of Akshar Yoga Centre, shared, “By calming the mind and promoting a deeper connection between the mind and body, yoga naturally enhances the body’s internal communication, thereby boosting its defence capabilities. Additionally, yoga promotes both internal and external communication within the body and works with the body’s energy flow, reviving each cell with life force energy, also known as prana. This movement of prana rejuvenates the body and enhances its innate ability to heal naturally.”
He recommends a gentle yoga sequence designed to support and boost the immune system, or exercises that support and boost the immune system:
1. Surya Namaskar and Surya Sadhna:
- Surya Namaskar (Sun Salutation):
This dynamic sequence of asanas warms up the body, improves blood circulation and stimulates the lymphatic system, which plays an important role in the immune system. Do 5-10 rounds of Surya Namaskar to energize the body and mind.
Practicing Surya Sadhna involves sitting or standing under the sun in the morning to receive its early rays. This practice helps harness the sun’s energy, which is important for overall health and well-being.
2. Mudras for immunity
Known as the Prana Mudra, this mudra activates the dormant energy in the body. By practising the Prana Mudra, you can strengthen your immune system and increase vitality.
This pose helps to increase the flow of energy and balance the body’s natural defenses. It is especially effective in strengthening the respiratory system.
This pose calms the nervous system and increases lung capacity, supporting overall immune function.
3. Vajrasana and Vajra Mudra:
This asana aids digestion and stimulates the flow of energy throughout the body. It is especially beneficial for improving the body’s natural defenses. Practicing this pose with the Vajra Mudra helps balance circulation and stimulate blood supply, the flow of energy through the vajra nadi, which is essential for overall health.
Himalayan Siddha Akshar claims, “Incorporating these yoga exercises into your routine can significantly enhance your innate immunity and overall health. Yoga not only addresses physical health but also promotes mental and emotional balance, creating a harmonious state that is essential for optimal immune function. By practicing this gentle yoga sequence, you can enhance your body’s natural defenses, increase energy flow and create a deeper connection between mind and body.”
