Is work stress an epidemic? Psychologists suggest ways to deal with it

From being aware of the existence of stress to knowing its causes, here are some ways to deal with work-stress.

Work stress is the biggest concern in the world right now. While many workplaces are striving to ensure that their employees have a healthy work-life balance, sometimes deadlines, additional work pressure and excessive responsibility can lead to anxiety and stress – this can further deteriorate an employee’s mental health. In an interview with HT Lifestyle, Debasmita Sinha, Chief Psychologist and Senior Director-Clinical Excellence, Manah Wellness, said, “Stress has always been a part of our lives. Stress at work is nothing new. Calling work stress a pandemic would be to villainise something that is largely useful, has always been there and cannot be eradicated. Stress is a natural response to a situation so that we can respond in an appropriate way for our physical and emotional safety. If there is a pandemic, it means our inability to cope with or address stress at work. Let’s focus on eliminating this inability.” Here are some tips to manage stress at work:

Eliminate stress:

First, let’s change our perspective and forget the common misconception about stress and its effects.

Acknowledge the existence of stress:

The next step is to accept the existence of stress in our lives. Do not deny its presence nor accept it. Resolve to overcome the effects of stress. Most of us fail at this step.

Learn stress-relieving skills:

Learn skills to make yourself aware of the presence of stress. Know when you are stressed. Learn skills to relieve stress. There are many ways to do this, from breathing exercises to relaxation techniques and meditation.

Know the triggers:

Know what causes stress. It could be environments, situations, or people. Avoid these triggers. If they are unavoidable, prevent or manage stress by adopting best practices.

Know when to ask for help:

Know when stress from a particular situation lasts for a long time, such as more than a week or two. This is a sign that you need outside help to deal with that stress.

Beware of unhealthy coping mechanisms:

Be aware of how stress manifests in your life as an unhealthy coping mechanism. Unhealthy eating habits, smoking or reckless driving? Work on your stress to avoid it.

Learn ways to relieve stress:

Adopt stress-relieving activities as a daily discipline. These can be physical activities, healthy eating, relaxation techniques, and/or healthy social interactions. Finally, seek professional help when needed.
