Grace, elegance and class- these words perfectly define the aura and fashion personality of actress Chitrangada Singh. Ask her how she sees it and she says, “Fashion has been a bit instinctive for me. Having an army background, I used to see my mother and all the beautiful women around me being very feminine, proper and classic. These are things that stay in your mind, and they form your own style. So I have been very classic when it comes to my silhouettes and what I like.”
The actress admits that she is now “more informed” and “instinctively, I wear something classic and a little bit elegant with restraint”. She says, “I like to be feminine but not too sexy or trying out too many fashions.” She also added that her mother is her biggest fashion critic.
The way Singh wears a sari is a sight to behold, but the 47-year-old Singh gives the credit to the clothes. She insists, “Everyone looks sexy in a sari. You put it on anyone, and it suddenly transforms you into a very feminine, sensual, delicate person. For my first film ( Hazaaron Khwaishein Aisi ; 2003), I wore a sari, so that was one thing that distinguished me as an actress at that time because I wore very little makeup and accessories. Before me, there was Smita (Patil, actress) ji and Shabana (Azmi, actress) ji. I am not the first, but the sari has been special for me.”
While for many actors their characters can influence their fashion sense, for Singh it was the complete opposite. “My character in Inkaar (2013) was of a very strong woman who is also feminine and not trying to be a man. The clothes I wore were very fitted, less revealing, not covered up, yet very structured. That was something I wanted to do, that was my fashion sense,” she revealed.
Talking about her films, Singh admitted that she has not received as many offers as she has in her filmography. When asked the reason behind this, she said, “There is a lack of good offers. I am here to work, but I don’t want to work just for the sake of working. Obviously, everyone needs money, but you don’t want to compromise on your creative choices and the way you see yourself and your potential.” However, Singh said that because of the voices around, it sometimes becomes difficult to stick to your point. “Sometimes it spreads that ‘Oh, this is very difficult’ and you get all kinds of labels like ‘arrogant’ and ‘stubborn’ very easily, just because you don’t want to follow the norms. But I find these labels very strange because I love cinema,” she said.
The actress thanks her audience for always keeping her relevant. She says, “No matter how much you work, there will only be four or five films that people will remember you for. Today, everything has become about numbers, but ultimately, the audience will remember what they connect with and thankfully, I have done some roles that the audience has connected with.”
