When it comes to skincare, many fads come and go. One such fad that is in the news these days is skin icing. If you are an avid social media user, you have probably seen beauty influencers using sleek ice rollers on their faces to the tune of trendy music. Known as facial skin icing, this practice is gaining popularity due to its purported benefits. Although there is no scientific evidence to support its effectiveness, some reports suggest that it can help combat acne, reduce inflammation and soothe puffy eyes. Despite the lack of scientific support, many people swear by this refreshing and invigorating skincare ritual. Renowned celebrity aesthetician and co-founder of BiE, Dinyar Workingboxwala shares his views with HT Lifestyle on the growing trend of skin icing, and discusses whether it is just a fad or is set to become an integral part of the skincare routine.

1. Deterioration of natural skin temperature

Our skin has an average temperature. Using ice disrupts this delicate temperature balance on the skin. A drastic drop in skin temperature can lead to dryness, redness, and even skin irritation.

2. Damaging the skin barrier

Imagine that your skin is a delicate balloon. It acts as a barrier between you and the outside world; it protects your body from external stressors. By applying ice directly to your face you are causing serious damage to this natural barrier. This sudden shock of cold can further weaken the already tired protective skin barrier and make the skin more vulnerable to all kinds of environmental damage and infections.

3. Risk of capillary damage

There are hundreds of blood capillaries under our skin that help with blood circulation. When ice is applied directly to the skin, these capillaries are put under severe stress. The sudden temperature difference will cause them to shrink, maybe even swell in the air, and eventually the capillaries will break and leave red, ugly scars. Often, this damage is irreversible and can lead to long-term skin problems.

4. Worsening of existing skin conditions

For people who already suffer from conditions like rosacea, eczema or acne, applying ice to the skin can worsen their condition. Cold temperatures can strip out the natural oils and moisture from our skin, leaving it looking dry and flaky.

5. Transient impact, permanent damage

Even though skin icing provides momentary benefits in terms of calming inflammation and swelling, its effects only last for a short time. The permanent damage far outweighs the temporary benefits. Constantly putting your skin under this kind of stress can lead to premature aging, increasing the risk of fine lines, wrinkles, and loss of elasticity.

6. There are safer alternatives

There are many effective, research-backed ways to get glowing skin. Diligently follow a simple and consistent skincare routine that will help you get healthy, glowing skin.

7. Rely on professional advice rather than trends

Always seek professional skin expert advice before adopting any trend. What works for one person may not work for another. Remember, your skin is pristine and needs more than the latest fad.
