The ICQ website posted a simple message saying, “ICQ will stop working on June 26,” and users are therefore advised to migrate to the messaging platform from Russian social media company VK, which acquired ICQ from AOL in 2010, but under a different corporate name.

It’s the end of a software program that helped make instant messaging on PCs a reality in the 1990s. ICQ, which stands for “I Seek You”, was originally created by an Israeli company called Mirabilis, before being bought by AOL in 1998 for $407 million.
ICQ was released several months before AOL’s Instant Messenger, and had 100 million registered users in 2001. But over time, ICQ lost ground to competing instant messengers and smartphone chat apps.

VK introduced a mobile version of ICQ, which helped grow subscribers in 2014. But after several attempts to modernize the software, development of the app has slowed. According to TechSpot, both the iOS and Android versions were removed from the App Store and Google Play.
