Often, pregnancy causes many women to gain layers of fat and excess skin around their lower midsection. In most cases, opting for a tummy tuck – which is mainly popular in the West – can help you get a flat stomach. “The popularity of mommy makeovers is increasing the demand for tummy tucks. After childbirth, many mothers try to regain their pre-pregnancy figure through diet and exercise. However, despite weight loss, the skin may lose its elasticity and remain flaky. And hence, women in their 40s are increasingly turning to tummy tuck surgery,” says Dr Dhruv Chavan, plastic and aesthetic surgeon at Clear Skin & Hair MD Clinic, Pune, who has undergone abdominal procedures called abdominoplasty. 25% of them are abdominoplasty.” “Nowadays, patients are more aware of potential skin laxity and come in directly requesting the procedure.”

Chart of rise in demand among new mothers
The need for a tummy tuck comes from many places, including after liposuction. On why it is in high demand among new mothers, plastic surgeon Dr. Karishma Kagodu, plastic and cosmetic surgeon and founder of Dr. Karishma Aesthetics, says, “Tummy tuck surgery is done by flattening the muscles in your abdominal wall, Helps in tightening and smoothing. Patients who have lost weight normally have stretched and sagging abdominal skin which can hide the actual shape of the body. Tummy tuck is a rescue approach to restore the contour of the midsection.”
but be careful
“Tummy tuck surgery is a cosmetic and not a medical solution to reduce the size of the abdomen. It is a solution for looks and does not address the underlying cause and condition,” warns Dr Amol Dahle, Consultant Gastroenterologist and Hepatologist, DPU Super Speciality Hospital, Pimpri, Pune, adding, “Except after pregnancy, if you are affected with obesity-related problems like diabetes metabolic syndrome, it will not help you.”

things to remember
Arrange for someone to help at home on the first day.
Patients are advised to get up and walk around cautiously, but avoid running or sitting up until the recovery journey is complete.
Follow your plastic surgeon’s advice on how to sit or lie down to minimize pain.
Pain relieving medications may be recommended to ease the discomfort.
Wear a supportive/compression garment for about six weeks after surgery.
What not to do after surgery
Patients are advised to avoid sudden bending at the waist to prevent the wound from reopening.
They should avoid strenuous activities for about 6-8 weeks after the procedure.
Avoid activities such as cycling, horseback riding, jogging, weight lifting or aerobics for about six to eight weeks.
They should not take bath in hot water, as it can promote infection and excessive bleeding, so stick to bathing in warm water only.
They should avoid excessive pressure on the abdomen, and be careful not to laugh loudly for the first few weeks after surgery.
