“Rare genetic variants in a handful of people may point to genes that hold clues to the developmental mechanisms of brain asymmetry in everyone. TUBB4B may be a good example of this,” Franks said.
These findings were based on genetic data covering more than 350,000 middle-aged to older adults in Britain in a dataset called UK Biobank. About 11% were left-handed.
For most people, determining which hand is dominant can be determined by chance.
“We believe that most cases of left-handedness are caused by simply random variation during fetal brain development, without specific genetic or environmental influences. The new findings may be relevant to the field of psychiatry. While most left-handed people do not have either of these conditions, people with schizophrenia are about twice as likely to be left-handed or ambidextrous and people with autism are about three times as likely, Franks said.
“Certain genes that function in the developing brain during early life may be involved in both brain abnormalities and psychiatric symptoms.
