New Delhi. These days, cases of vehicle theft are continuously increasing across the country. In comparison to the year 2022, the cases of vehicle theft in India have increased by almost two and a half times in 2023. The shocking thing is that every 14 minutes a car is being stolen in the country’s capital Delhi. This has been revealed in the report of digital insurance company ‘Theft and the City 2024’.
According to the report, more vehicles are being stolen in Delhi than other cities of the country. In the year 2023, the highest number of cars were stolen in Delhi. Last year, about 105 vehicle theft cases were registered here every day. At the same time, in the year 2023, 80 percent of the cases of car theft in the country were from New Delhi. However, the capital city’s total share in vehicle thefts declined from 56 percent in 2022 to 37 percent in 2023.
Cases increased in other cities also
Apart from Delhi, theft of vehicles has increased in other major cities also. The share of vehicle theft in Chennai doubled from 5 percent in 2022 to 10.5 percent last year. In Bengaluru, vehicle theft cases increased from 9 percent to 10.2 percent.
Thieves have an evil eye on the vehicles of these companies
According to the report, thieves are stealing vehicles which are in high demand in the market. Of all the cars stolen, 47 percent are Maruti Suzuki vehicles, these vehicles are in highest demand. The report revealed that Maruti WagonR and Maruti Swift are the most stolen cars in Delhi NCR, followed by Hyundai Creta, Hyundai Grand i10 and Maruti Swift and Dezire.
Thieves are stealing cars like this
New age cars are getting better security features like keyless entry. These work using the barcode installed in the windshield. To steal such vehicles, thieves scan the barcode and share the code offshore to unlock the cars and even gain remote access. After hacking this code, they get access to the vehicle and can easily start the engine and steal the vehicle.
According to the report, there were more thefts of bikes than cars in 2023. Hero Splendor, Honda Activa, Royal Enfield Classic 350, Honda Dio and Hero Passion were the most stolen bikes in India.
