In these, metals like nickel, cobalt and manganese are first extracted, which reduces the quality of lithium and waste a lot of lithium. Because of this, companies making battery do not take interest in extracting lithium from old batteries. Also, the environment is also damaged by old ways, due to which the business of battery waste is not very beneficial.
These electric vehicles will benefit from new technology
CSMCRI scientists have reversed this problem. In their new technology, lithium is first and pure. After extracting black powder from chronic lithium-ion batteries, the lithium is distinguished using anthracinone salt and hydrogen peroxide.
The Times report states that Kannan Srinivasan, director of CSIR-CSMCRI, said that this method avoids the use of rigorous chemicals and more energy. Chief researcher Alok Ranjan Patal said that this technique can remove 97 percent lithium in just one hour, while in older methods it takes 2-3 days to extract a ton of lithium. Also, this new technology gives lithium more pure.
If this technique is used on a large scale, then those who do the business of battery waste will be of great benefit. They will get a better price and will not harm the environment.
