The district administration has intensified the investigation of private schools operating in Jabalpur, Madhya Pradesh. The district administration has targeted eight major institutions for alleged financial irregularities. These schools have been ordered to refund a total of Rs 54 crore to the parents after imposing a fine of Rs 2 lakh each for unauthorized fee hike.
The action has been taken after a thorough investigation under the Madhya Pradesh Private School Fee and Other Subject Regulation Act 2017. The administration’s investigation revealed that these schools had increased their fees without giving proper authorization or notification to the district administration or the District Education Committee. The increased fee structure implemented in previous academic sessions was found to be illegal, leading to the latest enforcement measures.
After the investigation, the administration directed all private schools to charge the pre-determined fees instead of the increased rates. Taking a decisive step, the administration also ordered the owners of the eight private schools to deposit a fine of Rs 2 lakh each in the bank account of the Directorate of Public Instruction within 30 days.
Investigation revealed that these eight schools had collected fees of more than Rs 54 crore from more than 74,000 students. The administration has ordered that this amount be refunded to the parents.
The latest action of the administration has caused a lot of panic among the private school owners. Earlier in May, Collector Deepak Saxena had taken swift action against schools that had arbitrarily increased fees.
During that time, FIRs were filed against the principals and owners of more than a dozen schools, following which they were arrested. These schools are accused of having created an organised network in Jabalpur, through which billions of rupees have been extorted from parents in recent years. The ongoing investigation has revealed that the total amount involved is more than Rs 200 crore.
