The Supreme Court has stopped the ban on 10-year-old diesel and 15-year-old petrol trains in Delhi-NCR, which has given relief to 61 lakh vehicle owners.
You will know that the roads of Delhi and National Capital Region (NCR) were forbidden to run such vehicles which have been 15 years old. If your car runs from the desal, then it is 10 years for them. Such vehicles were also stopped to fuel in Delhi. The vehicles of some people who violated the regulations were also seized.
According to official data, there are 61.1 lakh EOL vehicles in Delhi and they have got relief after the Supreme Court’s decision. In fact, on 7 April 2015, the National Green Tribunal (NGT) directed to remove diesel vehicles more than 10 years old and more than 15 years old petrol vehicles from the roads in view of the contribution to pollution. On October 29, 2018, the Supreme Court upheld this order and said that such end of life (EOL) vehicles should not be allowed to run.
Delhi government took necessary steps
The Delhi government wrote a letter to CAQM on 3 July. In this letter, the government had requested CAQM to stop its order not to fuel 10 and 15 years old vehicles. The government wants CAQM to stop its order until the ANPR system is completely integrated throughout the NCR. Along with this, the Delhi government approached the Supreme Court to give relief to the people in this matter, after which the Supreme Court stayed its own order given in the year 2018.
There was differences about banning old vehicles
Some people say that if these vehicles are well maintained then they are not polluting. There are also strong views on the use of diesel. Workers like Sunita Narayan of the Center for Science and Environment opposes the use of diesel-powered vehicles, while some believe that further discussions were needed on the issue.
