The study conducted by researchers at the Institute for Health Matrix and Evolution (IHME) analyzed data from 204 countries and depicted a great picture of the global obesity crisis. The number of people suffering from overweight and obese has touched 929 million in 1990, which is 2.6 billion in 2021.

If the current trend continues, by 2050, a shocking 3.8 billion adult – 60 percent of the world’s adult population – will take over weight.

What is obesity epidemic going on?

The study throws light on many factors that promote this dangerous trend –

  • Poor diet: Sugars have consumed excessive calories due to the rise of processed and ultra-related foods with unhealthy fats and additives.
  • Motionless lifestyle: Due to spending hours in front of the screen with more people and being less attached to physical activities, weight gain has become inevitable.
  • Social and Economic Factors: Obesity is often associated with social and economic inequalities, with marginal communities to exercise nutritious food and a limited access to a safe environment.
  • Environment and Policy intervals: Many cities lack infrastructure to encourage healthy life, such as parks, movable spaces and policies promoting nutritious food.

Future influence: a heavy burden on healthcare

If obesity continues to grow uncontrollably, the healthcare system worldwide will face immense pressure. By 2050, the world’s one -fourth obese population is expected to exceed 65, which increases the risk of chronic diseases such as diabetes, heart disease and cancer.

Additionally, the study predicted an increase of 121 percent in obesity between children and adolescents. The surprising thing is that by 2050, one -third thick young people will be concentrated in North Africa, Middle East, Latin America and Caribbean.

How can we reverse this trend?

The good news is that it is not too late to turn things around. According to Jessica Kerr, co-writer at the Murdoch Children’s Research Institute in Australia, “There is a need for very strong political commitment to change the diet within permanent global food systems.”

Major strategies include:

  1. Healthy food policies: Governments should regulate the food industry by implementing Chinese taxes, promoting complete foods and reducing the consumption of processed food.
  2. Community-based initiative: More investment is required in public places, including parks, walking routes and inexpensive fitness programs.
  3. Educational Campaign: Teaching children and adults about nutrition and healthy habits is important for long -term changes.
  4. Better healthcare support: Better screening for obesity related conditions and access to weight management programs can help people take active steps towards better health.

Obesity is not only about aesthetics; This is a major public health crisis with far -reaching consequences. The world’s over half -weight population was already concentrated in only eight countries – China, India, United States, Brazil, Russia, Mexico, Indonesia and Egypt – urgency for intervention is much more than ever.

The world weight is increasing, but with decisive action, policy change and personal commitment, we can pave the way for a healthy future. It is ours to make the election before too late.
