There is a lack of awareness and misinformation about contraception – a method of preventing conception (pregnancy) or pregnancy, done with the help of medicines, devices, surgical procedures or sexual practices. Contraceptive pills or birth control pills contain either two hormones combined (progestogen and estrogen) or a single hormone (progestogen) to prevent pregnancy and they are safe and affordable.

In an interview with HT Lifestyle, Dr Shruti Ugran, Consultant – Gynaecologist, Gynae Endoscopist and Minimal Invasive Gynaecologist (MIG) at Motherhood Hospitals, Kharghar, highlights that there are several myths associated with contraception, which can confuse women, hence, it is essential to have accurate information about contraceptive options to make informed choices when it comes to your sexual and reproductive health.

Myth #1: Birth control pills can cause weight gain in women

fact: This statement has no credibility as there is no evidence, data or research to prove it. Women should not panic or get worried as birth control pills will not make them gain weight. Consult your specialist and clear all your doubts about contraception.

Myth #2: Birth control will harm your fertility

fact: There is no research available that confirms a link between contraception and infertility. Birth control will not harm your fertility in any way. Birth control can help improve fertility by regulating a woman’s cycle. Birth control is also known to improve mood swings and relieve cramps. Do not believe any misinformation about birth control causing infertility.

Myth #3: Birth control will protect against sexually transmitted infections (STIs)

fact: This is simply not true. Oral contraceptives, surgical sterilisation and intrauterine devices (IUDs) will not play any role in preventing STIs. However, using condoms correctly can help reduce the chances of STIs.

Myth #4: Taking antibiotics with birth control pills will make the pills less effective

fact: No, antibiotics will not interfere with the efficacy of birth control pills.

Myth #5: Using a condom is not a good idea as it might reduce her pleasure

fact: Condoms will not affect one’s sexual life in any way. Moreover, the level of pleasure will remain the same with or without the use of condoms.

Myth #6: It’s important to take a break from birth control pills

fact: When one wants to get pregnant and have a baby, the pills can be stopped. Or there is no reason why one should stop taking the pills. One can take the pills for as long as one wants, of course after consulting a doctor who will choose the right kind of pill for you. One should be careful when it comes to one’s health.

Don’t let any misconceptions stop you from making important decisions about your sexual health.
