Singapore, Last year, 500 migrant domestic workers became victims of fraud in Singapore. Home Minister K. Shanmugam gave this information. Most of the domestic workers in Singapore come from India, Sri Lanka and South East Asian countries. Responding to a question in Parliament on Wednesday, Shanmugam said the agencies regularly conduct anti-fraud awareness campaigns for workers employed in Singapore.
Shanmugam told Parliament that in 2023, about 500 migrant domestic workers became victims of fraud. This is 18 percent more than 2022. 423 cases of fraud were registered that year. Shanmugam, in a written reply to a question on increasing awareness among workers in such cases, said that under a program of the Ministry of Manpower, workers are taught such measures by which they can avoid becoming victims of fraud.
“They are informed about the latest fraud methods so that they can be helpful in detecting fraud and preventing fraud in their communities,” Shanmugam said, The Straits Times reported. According to the statistics of fraud in the year 2023, the number of such cases has increased to 46,563.
After conducting a survey on these matters, the police had earlier informed that in 2021, most of the cases like luring foreign domestic workers through internet and cheating in the name of giving loans were reported.
