Russia’s Bayon-M no. 2 satellites returned to Earth after spending 30 days in space. Rats, flies, plants seeds and microorganisms were sent to it. The aim of the mission was to understand the impact of space on life and to examine whether life could have come from space on earth.

Moscow: Russia’s biological research satellite Bayon-M no. 2 (Bion-M No.2) returned to safe earth on 19 September after completing a 30-day space journey. This mission is being called ‘Noas Arc’ because it sent more than 75 rats, more than 1,500 flies, plants seeds, microorganisms and other samples. The satellite was launched on August 20 from Baikanur Codeodrome in Kazakhstan via Soyuz-2.1B rocket. While walking in orbit of about 370 to 380 km height, it kept organisms and plants under constant cosmic radiation and without gravity.
Landing and initial investigation
10 section scientific program
The mission was a joint attempt by Russia’s Space Agency Rossosomos, Russian Academy of Sciences and Institute of Biomedical Problems (IBMP).
Its scientific plan was divided into 10 parts. The first two sections were for the education of gravity and radiation on animals. The third to the fifth sections were to understand the impact of space on plants and microorganisms. Biotechnology, safety from radiation and new technology testing from the sixth to the ninth section.
The tenth section was kept for the experiments of students, in which students from Russia and Belarus were involved.
Use of life from space
The most interesting experiment was ‘Metiorite’, which was carried out during the return. In this experiment, microorganisms were kept in basalt stones to see if they can live alive by facing the scorching heat arising during entry into the atmosphere. This experiment is associated with the investigation of that principle whether life can have come from space on earth. This is called Pencermia Theory.
