Around 12 people were injured when a three-storey building built on a hill slope collapsed in Ladakh’s Kargil district on Saturday. Officials said the incident occurred at around 3:30 am in Kabadi Nallah when an earthmover working near the slope caved in.
According to a PTI report, five of the 12 injured, including the driver of the earthmover, have been rescued from the debris. They have been admitted to a hospital and are currently said to be in a stable condition.
Officials said that a magisterial probe has been ordered into the incident. They further said that people from nearby houses have been evacuated and shifted to safer places.
Officials said that as soon as the information about the building collapse was received, the rescue operation was started. Police and army personnel and local volunteers were also involved in this operation.
According to police officials, most of the injured were tenants. It took nearly three hours for rescue workers to clear the debris and pull out the earthmover driver from inside the badly damaged cabin of the machine.
Committee formed to inspect sensitive areas
Mohammad Zafar Akhun, Chairman and Chief Executive Councillor, Ladakh Autonomous Hill Development Council, Kargil, and Shrikant Balasaheb Suse, Deputy Commissioner, Kargil, monitored the rescue operation.
He said the administration has decided to form a committee to inspect structures in “unsafe areas” of the district.
Suse further said the committee will also investigate any violations of building regulation laws and identify the culprits, the official said.
The Kargil deputy commissioner also assured that an investigation was underway and those found guilty would be punished. “We have taken the incident seriously and a magisterial inquiry has been ordered to probe the incident. Those found guilty will be punished,” Suse told PTI.
