Between 2005 and 2024, 18 student deaths were recorded at IIT Kanpur, 13 at IIT Kharagpur and 10 at IIT Bombay, RTI responses revealed.
According to Hindustan Times report, 115 Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) students have died by suicide since 2005, of which 98 were on campus and 17 were off campus. The data was obtained through a Right to Information (RTI) query filed by Dheeraj Singh, an IIT Kanpur alumnus and founder of the Global IIT Alumni Support Group.
Singh had filed an RTI application following the death of IIT Bombay student Darshan Solanki on February 12, 2023. The data further said that IIT Madras recorded the highest number of 26 incidents of student suicide between 2005 and 2024. After this is IIT Kanpur. 18 students died, 13 at IIT Kharagpur and 10 at IIT Bombay. A total of five deaths have been recorded so far this year, the news agency reported.
“The Department of Higher Education, which comes under the Union Education Ministry, initially rejected my application and asked me to file separate RTIs for different institutions,” Singh said. Request.

However, according to Singh, only 13 of the 23 IITs have shared data in the last eight months, the report said. “I also collected data from authentic sources in the public domain, including National Crime Records Bureau data and answers to questions asked in Parliament,” he said.
Singh also said that he wanted to highlight the immense pressure that students face in IITs in India and said that the time has come to take serious steps to curb this issue. “There is an urgent need to reform IIT education to make it less stressful for students, teachers and parents,” he said.
In February, IIT Delhi held its biggest-ever ‘open house’ meeting to address the concerns of students following campus-wide protests in the wake of the fourth student suicide this academic year. Students demanded to establish permanent internal committee Investigating campus suicides. At the open house with institute director Rangan Banerjee, UG and PG students put forward their demands, demanding “systemic change” in the way the institute functions.
