On Wednesday, April 24, residents of Bengaluru will experience a rare astronomical phenomenon known as ‘Zero Shadow Day’. This unique astronomical phenomenon – when the shadows disappear – is expected to occur between 12:17 pm and 12:23 pm tomorrow.
Zero shadow phenomenon will also be experienced at locations at the same latitude as Bengaluru in India.
What is zero shadow day?
Zero shadow day, a rare astronomical phenomenon, occurs when the Sun is aligned exactly overhead, leaving no shadows on vertical objects.
During a zero shadow day, the Sun reaches its zenith in the sky – located directly overhead, resulting in the absence of shadow on Earth.
This phenomenon occurs twice a year in the areas located between the Tropic of Cancer and the Tropic of Capricorn.
The city of Bengaluru, located at approximately 13.0 degrees north latitude, witnesses this phenomenon every year around 24/25 April and 18 August.
According to the Astronomical Society of India website, “For people living between +23.5 and -23.5 degrees latitude, the Sun’s declination will be twice their latitude – once during Uttarayan and once during Dakshinayan. During these two days, the sun will be directly overhead at noon and no object will cast a shadow on the ground.”
According to Britannica, declination is the angular distance of an object north or south of the celestial equator.
Zero shadow days vary for different locations on Earth.
The Indian Institute of Astrophysics in Bengaluru will organize the program at its Koramangala campus to spread knowledge about this astronomical phenomenon. It has invited students, teachers and astronomy enthusiasts to engage in hands-on activities from 10 am to 1 pm. Activities include observing and measuring the changing shadow lengths of objects.
