New Delhi: Franz Beckenbauer, one of Germany’s greatest football players, died on Monday at the age of 78. Beckenbauer led Germany to World Cup victory in 1974 and then another victory as coach in 1990. The German Football Federation gave this news quoting his family.
Beckenbauer played 103 matches for West Germany. He achieved the first major success for West Germany by winning the 1972 European Championships. After that, in 1974, avenging the defeat by England in the 1966 final, it won the World Cup on home soil. As national coach, his West Germany team lost to Argentina in the 1986 World Cup final, but four years later managed to win the World Cup in Italy as a joint German team.

Bayern Munich made the winner
Also at club level in the mid-1970s, Beckenbauer’s Bayern Munich team established itself as the dominant club on the world stage by winning three consecutive European Cups and three consecutive Bundesliga titles. Beckenbauer twice earned the prestigious title of European Footballer of the Year. His career statistics are a testament to his versatility and skill. He scored 109 goals in a career spanning 19 years, 64 of which came during his 439 appearances for Bayern Munich. His international career was equally impressive, in which he played 103 matches and scored 14 goals for West Germany.

Was famous as ‘Der Kaiser’
Beckenbauer was known by his nickname Der Kaiser (The Emperor). He was one of three people to win the World Cup as a player and coach. Apart from them, Mario Jagallo of Brazil and Didier Deschamps of France have done this feat.
