A woman in northwest China, identified only as Ms Li, has made headlines after giving birth to twins from both her uteruses in early September. This rare medical condition, which affects only 0.3% of women worldwide, is known to have an extremely low success rate when it comes to giving birth to healthy babies, according to the South Morning China Post.
Lee’s condition, where both uteruses are fully formed and include the ovaries and fallopian tubes, is uncommon. Even more remarkable is the fact that she conceived naturally in both uteruses, an incidence described by Dr. Cai Ying, a senior obstetrician at Xi’an No. 4 Hospital, as “one in a million.”
Generally, women with two uteruses have a higher risk of complications during pregnancy, such as miscarriage, premature birth, and underdeveloped fetuses. Lee had previously suffered a miscarriage at 27 weeks. However, when she became pregnant again in January, doctors at Xi’an Hospital devised an elaborate plan to ensure a safe delivery.
At eight and a half months pregnant, Lee gave birth to a healthy boy weighing 3.3 kg and a girl weighing 2.4 kg via cesarean section. Both mother and baby were released from the hospital four days after birth, the publication said.

Li’s story has attracted widespread attention on Chinese social media. One user jokingly commented, “The babies lived a wonderful life inside their mother’s tummy. Instead of living in the same house like other conjoined twins, they lived in separate villas.
“My co-worker has two uteruses. Before having a son, she lost her child three times. It wasn’t easy for him!” SCMP quoted another user as saying.
This is not the first case of its kind. In December 2022, a woman in Alabama, US, also gave birth to twins from both her uteruses, a rare but possible phenomenon that continues to fascinate medical professionals and the public alike.
