The discovery was 675 meters below the sea surface in the Iron Bottom Sound located near the Solomon Islands of the Pacific Ocean. The team riding on a ship called exploration vessel nottilus has found a piece of this historical ship. USS New Orleans suffered heavy damage from Japanese Torpedo during the Battle of Tassafarga in November 1942. In this attack, about one-third of the ship was torn, including the front part. More than 180 marines were killed in this incident.
History was lost in depths
The ship was severely damaged in this attack and was submerged in the sea. However, a brave crew saved him from drowning, for which he was posthumously awarded three Navy Cross. Frank Thompson of the US Navy History and Heritage Command, which is involved in this historic discovery, said that he has discovered this based on the statement of Rov Hercoolis, Navy’s old records, archive documents, and eyewitnesses.
