Winter Skin Care Alert: 8 Morning Habits That Can Dry Out Your Skin and Age It Prematurely

Winter brings welcome coolness. But for your skin, this could be the season of silent damage. Drops in temperature and humidity disrupt the skin barrier, increasing the risk of dryness, sensitivity and premature aging. However, what many people don’t realize is that certain everyday morning habits can aggravate these problems, often without any obvious signs until the damage has accumulated.

How to avoid dry skin in winter?

Dermatologist Dr Bindu Sthalekar, founder of Skin Smart Solutions and Dr Shweta Tripathi, dermatologist, beauty injector and founder of My Skindome, tell HT ShopNow that many common morning skin care habits can dry out your skin and contribute to premature ageing.

But these can be prevented by avoiding some unhealthy skin care habits in winter.

1. Wash your face with warm water

A steamy hot shower may feel relaxing, but the heat strips essential lipids and ceramides from the skin barrier. “Hot water accelerates transepidermal water loss, making the skin dry, rough, and prone to fine lines,” says Dr. Tripathi. Dr. Sthalekar explains that hot water also strips the skin of its natural moisture barrier and causes inflammation, which speeds up collagen loss. Both dermatologists recommend using lukewarm water which cleanses effectively without disrupting the skin’s natural moisture balance.

2. Starting the day without moisturizer

Skipping moisturizer is a big deal. Dr Tripathi explains why: “Overnight, skin loses moisture and needs replenishment. Opt for barrier-supporting ingredients like ceramides, hyaluronic acid, niacinamide and peptides, especially in winter.” She also recommends applying moisturizer within 60 seconds of cleansing to effectively retain moisture. “If you live in a dry climate or spend most of your time in hot places, choose a cream rather than a gel,” says Dr Sthalekar.

3. Applying Vitamin C without moisturizer or SPF

,Vitamin C serums in the 2025 formulation are more potent, but may be drying or irritating when applied to freshly cleansed skin, and may increase photosensitivity and irritation when applied without sunscreen”, says Dr. Tripathi. She also recommends applying a hydrating serum with broad-spectrum SPF 30+ before vitamin C.

4. Using harsh or foaming cleansers

Using high-foaming, sulfate-based cleansers may get your skin squeaky clean, but that tightness is a sign of barrier damage. ,Over time, this causes irritation, dullness and accelerated aging, so replace them with a gentle, pH-balanced cleanser that cleanses without stripping,” suggests Dr. Sthalekar.

5. Consuming excessive caffeine drinks before hydrating

“Morning coffee culture is huge, especially high-caffeine cold brew. But drinking caffeine before water can dehydrate your skin and make it look dull all day,” Dr. Tripathi tells HT ShopNow. Instead, she recommends drinking at least a glass of water before your morning caffeine.

6. Forgetting Sunscreen Just Because It’s Cold

Ultraviolet rays do not hibernate in winter. In fact, UVA, the wavelength responsible for DNA damage and aging, remains constant throughout the year. For better protection, especially in polluted urban environments, apply sunscreen with antioxidants.

7. Applying active ingredients to dry skin

Dr. Sthalekar suggests trying to reduce the use of retinoids, acids, and exfoliating serums as these can be harsher on your skin in the winter. Applying these to dry, dehydrated skin increases irritation, and sometimes micro-inflammation is a major cause of premature aging. The best way to incorporate these serums and acids is to layer them strategically.

“If irritation persists, apply every other night or use short-contact therapy. This ensures results without compromising the skin barrier”, she says.

8. Relying on SPF instead of actual sunscreen in makeup

“Tinted moisturizers and foundations now claim higher SPF levels, but they still don’t provide adequate coverage on their own,” says Dr. Tripathi. Inadequate sun protection remains the No. 1 cause of premature skin aging. Therefore, she recommends applying a dedicated sunscreen every morning.

Dr Sthalekar says winter skin care is not about taking more steps, it is about choosing the right steps and doing them thoughtfully. Small changes in the morning can maintain skin elasticity, prevent premature aging and support a strong, healthy skin barrier all season long.
