Leader of the Opposition (LoP) in the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly Sunil Sharma threatened to run a “parallel” government in the Union Territory in protest against Assembly Speaker Abdul Rahim. “We held a parallel assembly…the Speaker marshaled our MLAs. We raised issues from our areas and the media covered it,” he said.
He warned not to take this “parallel” meeting lightly. “if your [J&K Assembly Speaker/ government] The behavior challenges Indian integrity and sovereignty, we will run a parallel government and this is my warning to them,” said LOP Sunil Sharma.
He also posted a video of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leaders holding a “parallel meeting”. He has written. “Today is a dark chapter in the history of Jammu and Kashmir Assembly. We all BJP MLAs will ensure that no anti-India conspiracy succeeds. The National Conference should not think that they can suppress our voice by forcibly throwing us out of the Assembly.
Tremendous uproar in Jammu and Kashmir Assembly
Sunil Sharma’s comments come after a massive controversy erupted in the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly on Friday over a resolution defending Article 370.
Sharma said the Speaker himself drafted the resolution and demanded the Jammu and Kashmir government to withdraw the “unconstitutional” resolution.
The opposition leader alleged that BJP MLAs were “misbehaved” by marshals on the instructions of the Assembly Speaker. “We wanted a debate on it but the MLAs were marshalled out… so we are holding a parallel assembly here,” he said.
There was uproar in the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly for the third consecutive day on Friday after the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) MLA from Kupwara displayed a banner in support of the restoration of Article 370 in the Union Territory.
The BJP MLAs raised slogans and clashed over their banners with fellow members, including Engineer Rashid’s brother and Awami Ittehad Party MLA Sheikh Khurshid. BJP MLAs were seen entering the well of the House. On the orders of Assembly Speaker Abdul Rahim Rather, he along with Sheikh were thrown out of the House by marshals.
A day earlier, on November 7, MLA Sheikh Khurshid had displayed a banner on Article 370, the provision granting special status to the erstwhile state which was abrogated in August 2019.
News agency ANI reported that in the first session of the newly elected Assembly in the Union Territory, a resolution opposing the abrogation of Article 370 and supporting the restoration of special status of Jammu and Kashmir was passed by voice vote.
The first session of the newly elected Assembly in Jammu and Kashmir began on November 4 with the presentation of resolutions.
‘The darkest day of democracy’
Reacting to the uproar, JK Leader of Opposition Sunil Sharma termed it the “darkest day of democracy”. He accused the Assembly Speaker of behaving as the “President of the National Conference” instead of the House.
BJP leader Sunil Sharma said that Article 370 was removed by the Supreme Court, the supreme temple of democracy of the country and this decision was taken.
“Article 370 is history now. They are comparing Article 370 with a word like special status which does not exist in the Constitution.
“I challenge [chief minister] Omar Abdullah said that if the word special status is found anywhere in the Constitution in relation to Jammu and Kashmir, then I will retire from politics.
On August 5, 2019, the Center abrogated the provisions of Article 370 of the Constitution, which had provided special rights to Jammu and Kashmir, and bifurcated the erstwhile state into union territories.
