Russia and Ukraine have been fighting a war for three years. They are attacking with missiles, bombs and rockets. But not only on land, both are face to face in the court as well. The matter is about a bridge. Ukraine alleges that Russia is trying to keep the Kerch Strait completely under its control. This is a blatant violation of maritime laws. On Monday, both countries were face to face in the International Court. Let us know what is this Kerch Strait dispute? Why does this place matter so much to Russia and Ukraine?
Ukraine’s lawyer Anton Korinevich said at the beginning of the hearing, Russia wants to take complete control of the Sea of Azov and the Kerch Strait. It cannot be given this freedom. This whole matter started when Russia started building a 19 kilometer long bridge in the Kerch Strait. This bridge connects Russia to Crimea. Russia has snatched Crimea from Ukraine. Ukraine is repeatedly troubled about this. Fuel, food grains and other products are supplied to Crimea through this bridge. Now the Russian army is sending logistics for its soldiers from here. If this bridge is closed, it will become very difficult for Russia in the Ukraine war.
What does Ukraine say?
Ukraine attacked this bridge a few days ago. Zelensky wants this bridge to be demolished. He claims that Russia has deliberately built it at a low height so that ships coming from all over the world cannot pass under it. Only small Russian ships can pass through this route. This route also connects the Sea of Azov to the Black Sea. Russian lawyer Gennady Kuzmin strongly opposed this argument of Ukraine. He said, this is Russia’s territory and no court in the world can give a decision on this. Ukraine’s claim should be rejected.
What is Russia’s claim?
Russia says that Ukraine wants to impose restrictions on the sovereignty of Crimea. It does not come under its jurisdiction. The court has given its verdict in 2020 that Russia’s claim is correct. The hearing will continue till October 5. But perhaps it will take years to reach a final decision in this case. Because there are so many answers and questions and in the end no decision is reached.
