Putin Zelensky Meeting: The name of Switzerland, Austria or Türkiye is being considered for a possible meeting of Putin and Jailonsky. But Ukraine rejected Budapest due to suspicion of Hungary’s fairness.

At present, no fixed date or place has been fixed for the meeting of Putin and Jailonsky. The Russian side has not yet made any official statement on the possibilities of such a meeting. Whereas Ukraine is talking about meeting at a neutral place in European countries like Switzerland, Austria or Türkiye. Interestingly, the Ukrainian President denied the possibility of holding a meeting in Budapest citing Hungary’s opposition to support Kiev.
Doubt on the fairness of Hungary
According to BBC English, Budapest was mentioned as a place of possible meeting after talks in the White House. It was said that America is in its favor. Hungary Foreign Minister Peter Sijarto said, “They can come to Hungary at any time. Let us inform us an hour before and we are ready to guarantee fair, decent, safe and equal conditions for everyone in Hungary.” But not everyone considers Hungary’s capital to be sufficiently neutral. Prime Minister Victor Orban is one of the few European leaders who have maintained relations with Putin. He has also stopped financial assistance to Ukraine and has also promised to veto on Ukraine membership in the European Union.
Jailonsci turned down the proposal of Budapest
Jailonsky said on Thursday, “Budapest did not support us honestly.” He told reporters, “I am not saying that the policy was against Ukraine, but it was against Ukraine’s support.” He said that it would be ‘challenging’ to talk in Budapest. On Wednesday, Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk posted on X that he is opposed to holding talks in Budapest. The city was the site of a summit in 1994, as a result of which Kiev handed over its share of the Soviet nuclear arsenal in exchange for Russian security assurance. Later, after illegal occupation of Crimea by Moscow in 2014 and its full attack in 2022, these assurances became meaningless. Tusk said, “Maybe I am superstitious, but this time I will try to find another place.”
When did both meet the last meeting
Putin and Jailnsky’s last direct meeting took place in December 2019 during the ‘Normandi Format’ summit in Paris. The leaders of Germany and France also participated in that meeting. There has been no direct talks between the two leaders since the full invasion of Russia in 2022. ‘Normandi Format’ means an informal meeting between France, Germany, Russia and Ukraine leaders to resolve the Ukraine War in 2014. Whose name was found after a D-Day ceremony in Normandi region of France. The group was established in 2014 and had an important role in the mediation of the Minsk agreements for peace and ceasefire before Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in 2022.
Jailonski wants security guarantee
Jailonsky said, “We want to gain an understanding on the security guarantee structure within 7-10 days. And based on that understanding, our goal is to hold a tripartite meeting with US President Donald Trump.” Commenting on possible places, he said, “We agree on Switzerland, Austria. Türkiye is a NATO country for us and part of Europe. And we are not opposed to it.” Jailonsky also indicated that he is ready for a tripartite meeting with Trump and Putin to end the Russia-Ukraine war. He said, “We have to stop this war. We need support from America and Europe.”
