WhatsApp’s new cross-platform messaging feature is in beta test in the EU. If launched in India, users will also be able to send messages from WhatsApp to other messaging apps like Arattai, which means direct messaging can be done on any app without installing any other app.
Messages will be sent from WhatsApp to any other app.WhatsApp is now working on a new cross-platform messaging feature, which will soon allow users to send messages on other apps as well. Through this new feature, WhatsApp users will be able to chat directly on India’s homegrown messenger Arattai and other apps, that too without installing them. Currently this feature is available only for beta users in Europe.
The testing of this feature has been launched due to the rules of the Digital Markets Act (DMA) of the EU. These rules direct big tech companies to keep their platforms open, and allow users to message with other apps. This means that WhatsApp will now give the ability to send messages with users of any third-party app.
Currently, this feature is available only for the BirdyChat app, but it hints that WhatsApp may become interoperable with other platforms in the future. Sridhar Vembu, founder of Zoho, has always suggested that messaging apps should adopt interoperability like UPI and email, so that the messaging system does not remain a ‘closed garden’.
This feature is not yet available between WhatsApp and Arattai in India. Arattai provides end-to-end encryption on calls, but not messages. Therefore there may be some delay in its approval. If future interoperability rules come into effect in India, WhatsApp will likely introduce this feature to Indian users as well.
This new feature will prove to be very useful for the users. With this, they will not need to open different messaging apps and the chatting experience will be even easier and smoother.
This cross-platform initiative of WhatsApp can prove to be a big step towards the growing need of digital markets and better experience of users.
