The WBCSE Class 12 examinations started with 6.6 lakh students under the new semester system, with strict guidelines sensitive as 122 centers.

Estimated 6.6 lakh students appeared for the West Bengal Council of Higher Secondary Education (WBCSE) Class 12 board exams on Monday, the new semester system has been introduced for the first time at this level. 56.03 percent of the candidates reported by the news agency PTI were girls.
Class 12 students, who wrote the semester examination in class 11, are now taking their last school exams in the same format. WBCSE President Chiranjeeb Bhattacharya said that the exam will continue till 22 August.
The board confirmed that this is the first time in its history that the class 12 examination is being conducted in a semester-based format. Bhattacharya said, “Students passing the first and second semester examinations of class 11 and took the third semester examination (class 12) exam at 2,106 centers across the state.” The papers were held from 10 am to 11.15 am.
He said that 122 examination centers have been classified as ‘sensitive’. All electronic devices, including mobile phones, have been banned at the centers, and steps are being taken to prevent misconduct.
The final examination in the annual system, which was followed since 1978, was held in March this year. Under the new pattern, semester one and three include multiple-love questions to encourage logical thinking and argument, while semester two and four will facilitate brief answer and development quotient questions to test writing skills, Bhattacharya explained.
The semester 3 exam started on 8 September and will end on September 22, 2025. Examinations are being conducted in a single shift from 10 am to 10.45 pm at 2,016 centers, out of which 122 have been identified sensitively.

The board also issued strict guidelines for the students. From this year, calculators and other items such as printed or written materials, plastic pouches, pen drives, log tables, electronic pen or scanner, mobile phone, Bluetooth devices, smart clocks, cameras, glasses, bags, health bands, or any other gadgets are not allowed inside the examination hall.
The exam started with language letters including Bengali, English, Hindi, Nepali, Urdu, Santhali, Odia, Telugu and Punjabi, and will end with biological science, political science and cost and taxation.
